Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke
Taking Control Self Management

The NICHS “Taking Control” Self Management Programme will help you develop the skills and confidence you need to better manage your condition and help you feel stronger and better equipped to deal with daily life.

The programme is a weekly workshop of 2.5 hours over 6 weeks. It is free of charge and covers the following :

• Managing symptoms
• Medication”how–to”
• Working with your health care team
• Setting weekly goals
• Effective problem solving
• Better communication
• Handling difficult emotions
• How to relax
• Tips for eating well

The programme will also enable you to meet other people who share similar experiences and who understand what it’s like to live with a long–term condition. Here is some of the feedback we have received:

“My long term condition has controlled my life for 12 years; I feel now that I can control it”

“The programme was more informative and helpful and raised my level of optimism and realisation that I can do more. I would highly recommend it; the leaders were articulate and professional. They were most willing to help everyone to obtain the max benefit.”

“My problems are not unique so this helped me see things more balanced, the supportive and accepting group helped my outlook.”
