A ban on selling disposable vapes cannot come quickly enough. Following the announcement that a ban in England and Wales is coming into force in June 2025, Fidelma Carter, Head of Public Health at Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke (NICHS), commented:
"Disposable vapes are an environmental menace, but more importantly, they are often heavily marketed at young people to hook them on vapes.''
“We know that Andrew Muir, the Minister for Agriculture and Environment in Northern Ireland, is committed to banning disposable vapes, and we would encourage him to commit to doing so within the same timeframe as England and Wales.”
“We are disappointed that plans to ban disposable vapes in the Republic have essentially been put on hold due to the pending General Election. We hope a new government for the Republic of Ireland will also bring forward a ban in 2025 so that disposable vapes can be banned throughout Britain and the Island of Ireland in 2025."
“Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke believes that vapes should only be used in the short-term to help existing smokers quit. However, we encourage smokers to use the evidence-based Stop Smoking free services that offer support and advice to quit smoking.”
“We are concerned about the long-term health consequences of vapes. We know there has been an increase in the use of disposable vapes among young people, so we welcome the move to ban disposables in England and Wales and ask our NI Government to act quickly and in the same timeframe to ban disposables here, too, from June 2025.”
