Local health charity marks start of 70th year at Holiday World Show

15 Jan 2016

To mark the start of its 70th anniversary year, Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke is offering free blood pressure checks in the 50+ Village at this year’s Belfast Telegraph Holiday World Show.

2016 is a very important year for Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke. The local charity was started in 1946 by 16 volunteers who were concerned about tuberculosis in Northern Ireland. From the very start, the charity worked hard to prevent disease by making people aware of how TB was spread. It also cared for those affected, often the most disadvantaged families, by supporting them with advice and welfare grants and speaking to the authorities on their behalf. That focus on care and prevention has not changed, though over the years, as the threat of TB diminished, the charity’s remit evolved to cover other respiratory illnesses plus cardiac and stroke conditions.

Health checks are a cornerstone of the charity’s health promotion work, and in fact began at the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1987. High blood pressure increases your risk of heart disease and stroke so it is very important to check it. For NI Chest Heart and Stroke, continuing its work to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Northern Ireland is the best way to celebrate its 70 years, so please visit Stand BF7 and get your blood pressure checked.
