Reacting to media reports that poor behaviour by surgeons was leading to a ‘significant risk to patient safety’ in the cardiac surgical unit in the Royal Victoria Hospital Neil Johnston, Public Affairs and Policy Manager, Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke commented:

“We are deeply concerned to hear through the media about unacceptable behaviours by a handful of cardiac surgeons at the RVH. We welcome the fact that the Trust has accepted the recommendations of an independent external review. The Trust must now ensure that they act swiftly and decisively to implement the recommendations."

“It is highly unsatisfactory that apparently four cardiac surgeons were working from home. Northern Ireland has dreadful waiting lists and we cannot afford for the cardiac surgical unit not be working at full capacity and in an effective manner."

"We welcome the fact that the Minister of Health, Mike Nesbitt is to meet with the Trust Chair to address why the issue has apparently gone on for a long period of time."
