During adolescence, youth experience a variety of changes: physical, social, emotional, and mental. As youth navigate their day, they may experience stressors from school to peers to family. Some youth may turn to e-cigarettes and/or cannabis vapes to relieve stress and as a coping mechanism. This lesson will review stress, how to manage stress in a healthy way, and ways to support a friend who is dealing with stress, with the ultimate goal of helping you not turn to e-cigarettes to reduce your stress.

    By hearing and participating in this lesson, students will:

    • Define what is stress.
    • Identify triggers and causes of stress.
    • Contrast healthy and unhealthy ways to cope with stress.
    • Practice and apply strategies to manage stress.
    • Practice ways to manage the stress of friends who vape (responding with compassion and empathy).
    • Discover which individual strategy to reduce stress works best for them.
    • Destigmatize mental health and substance use.
    • Stress is a part of everyone’s life.
    • There are healthy ways to cope with stress.
    • Using e-cigarettes and/or cannabis vapes are an unhealthy way to cope with stress.
    • Stigma of substance use may worsen mental health and underlying stressor.
